Essential building works will be carried out at Arrowe Park Walk-in Centre from Monday 11 November for four weeks. Although services will be running as normal, please attend Eastham Walk-in Centre or Victoria Central (Wallasey) Walk-in Centre if you are able to do so. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Nutrition and Dietetics

The Nutrition and Dietetics Service provides expert advice about nutrition, how the body uses nutrients and the relationship between nutrition, health and disease.


We strive to maintain, improve or maximise the health of individuals, groups and families to treat illness and prevent nutrition related problems.


We provide nutritional interventions and support for a variety of needs:


  • Obesity
  • Undernutrition / unintentional weight loss
  • Swallowing problems resulting from a stroke, cancer, Parkinson’s disease or mental health problems eg dementia
  • Eating disorders
  • Diabetes and Impaired Glucose Regulation (pre-diabetes)
  • Heart disease
  • Food allergies
  • Gastroenterology
  • Kidney disease
  • Cancer


Dietetic support includes individual dietary counseling, providing individual and group education, motivation techniques, working with support services to help with food provision, the use of prescription nutritional products to treat under nutrition and tube feeding.


We also act as a specialist resource for other health and social care professionals to promote best nutritional care.

We accept referrals from GPs and all health or social care professionals using the the following referral forms:

Diabetes Smart is a free course to support local people living with pre-diabetes and type 1 and 2 diabetes.

The free course is facilitated by our trained professionals in venues across Wirral. It’s an opportunity for people to learn about making positive lifestyle changes and managing their pre diabetes and type 1 and 2 diabetes.


Our free and informative course is designed to help people:

  • think smart- think differently about their diagnosis

  • act smart- make informed choices (healthy eating, physical activity, self-care)

  • live smart- manage their diabetes /pre-diabetes on a daily basis 


How the course is delivered 

It’s recommended that everyone who books onto the course attends a core session first. This session focuses on what pre diabetes and diabetes is and how people can manage their condition.  

Following attendance on the core session there are 8 practical modules people can choose from including: 


  • healthy lifestyle - 2 sessions, 2 hrs per session
  • healthy food choices and support  to manage weight
  • carbohydrate awareness - 2 hr session
  • what carbohydrates are and how they affect blood glucose levels
  • reading and understanding food labels - 1.5 hour session
  • using food labels to guide food choices
  • keeping well with diabetes - 2.5 hour session
  • how to prevent potential health problems linked with diabetes
  • hysical activity - 1.5 hr session
  • benefits of physical activity and ways to get more active
  • insulin - for people treating diabetes with insulin - 1.5 hr session
  • all aspects of managing diabetes using insulin injections
  • review session - 2 hr session
  • opportunity to review how people are managing their pre diabetes/diabetes, revisiting ways of managing the conditions and sharing top tips
