St Catherine's Health Centre Opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex

THE Earl of Wessex officially opened St Catherine's Health Centre on Monday 23rd September.

Prince Edward was greeted by over 100 local school children before he met staff and patients of the Heart Support and Physiotherapy services that operate from the centre.

Frances Street, chairman of Wirral Community NHS Trust said: "It was an absolute pleasure to show His Royal Highness around our building and introduce him to staff and patients. He spent time chatting to people throughout the visit and even though he was running late, he took time to talk to everyone he met."

During the official opening ceremony, he joked with guests and the hundreds who were watching from the surrounding balconies as he officially opened the centre's commemorative plaque with a flourish.

Guests at the event also had the opportunity to see the new permanent exhibitions on the ground floor which chart the development of the site from workhouse to state of the art health centre and individual art pieces around the building supplied by Wirral Metropolitan and Birkenhead Sixth Form College art students.

Over the last three years, the development of the new health centre has transformed the site of the former Victorian St Catherine's Hospital into a modern, award winning state of the art healthcare facility that now hosts two GP practices, a late night pharmacy and range of community based NHS services including Sexual Health Wirral, Wirral Drugs Service and a range of outpatient clinics.

Frances added "It was a fantastic event, a real opportunity for us to showcase what we do and the Prince certainly looked like he enjoyed his visit to our fabulous new building and to Birkenhead."
