Trust develops easy read leaflets for patients with learning disabilities

Most patients experience a degree of anxiety and stress when visiting NHS services such as the local Walk-in Centre, their GP or Health Centre.

We also know that patient information leaflets can often feel like an information overload. Complicated jargon and too much detail can be confusing and stressful when you’re worried about something. If you struggle to read, have learning disabilities or if English isn’t your first language, it can be a battle to get the information you need quickly.

Wirral Community NHS Foundation Trust has been developing its own bespoke collection of Easy-read leaflets to combat this issue. Easy-reads are designed with information that has been stripped back, so that only the important points remain. They use jargon-free, straightforward language and use big, clear pictures or symbols to illustrate the text.

The helpful illustrations and symbols are specifically designed for people with learning difficulties, and are valued by people with low literacy levels, are elderly or deaf or use English as a second language.

With the introduction of NHS England’s Accessible Information Standard, NHS providers have been encouraged to follow a consistent approach to meeting the information and communication needs of patients, service users, carers and parents, whose needs relate to a disability, impairment or sensory loss.

Jo Harvey, Director of Human Resources & Organisational Development said: “Wirral Community NHS Foundation Trust has embraced whole-heartedly the Accessible Information Standard, of which Easy-reads play an important part. We are really proud of the excellent research and work that is contributing to our trust equality and diversity agenda. Feedback on the Easy-reads produced so far has been excellent and we look forward to expanding our catalogue and further improving access to healthcare for patients with learning disabilities.”
