Health Matters - Helping local children get the best start in life

Did you know that the future health and wellbeing of a person is shaped in the first few years of their life?

There's approximately 22,000 children under the age of five living in Wirral and our Health Visiting Service and Livewell Programme work with children and their families across Wirral to promote and improve their health and wellbeing. Here's how...

Our Health Visiting Service provides a range of information, support and advice to ensure that families are fully supported to give their children the best possible start in life. The team also have a number of dedicated Healthy Child clinics providing baby weigh in checks, dietary advice and support. (See our noticeboard for further details.)

What our parents/carers say about us:

"Staff are always supportive and very friendly."

"I never feel rushed even when I have lots of questions."
"I always feel staff have time for me and my son."

The Livewell and Health Visiting Team also work with nurseries, Children's Centres and schools. Their work focuses on healthy eating, oral health, active play, breastfeeding and emotional health & wellbeing.

We know that children are more likely to have a healthy lifestyle if it's made fun for them. Here are some tips to help the entire family to get healthy:

  • Try walking to school twice a week
  • Eat at the table together
  • Reduce the time children spend watching the TV and playing on computer games and put physical activity in its place
  • Prepare more meals at home. It takes a little longer, but this way you can then control what you put in food
  • Include children in family activities such as walking the dog, washing the car or gardening. They won't see it as exercise, just fun!
