Wirral Community NHS Trust has signed up to the Nursing Times Speak Out Safely campaign.

  • We want every member of our staff to feel able to raise concerns about wrongdoing or poor practice when they see it and confident that concerns will be addressed in a constructive way.

  • We promise that where staff identify a genuine patient safety concern, we will support them, fully investigate and, if appropriate, act on their concern. We will also give them feedback about how we have responded to the issue they have raised, as soon as possible.

"Whether a permanent employee, an agency or temporary staff member, or a volunteer, we encourage our staff to speak up when they feel something is wrong. We want all staff to be able to Speak Out Safely.

We're proud to sign up to the 'Speak Out Safely' campaign. We recognise that our staff are often the best people to identify anything that may affect the safety and care of our patients or when care falls below the standard our patients deserve. We want all of our staff to know it is safe for them to speak up when they feel something is wrong or when action is needed.

We already have in place several ways to enable staff in raise concerns and we are committed to investigating all of them. During our regular 'patient safety walkabouts' members of the trust Board talk with our front line staff and encourage any concerns to be shared directly with them with the individuals manager or other senior managers. Our Raising Concerns policy also provides a direct route for staff to email concerns to the Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development and the Director of Quality and Nursing.

Our support of the Nursing Times Speak Out Safely campaign provides further reassurance to our patients, staff and volunteers that we encourage a culture of openness where our staff can raise concerns about standards, the quality of care and they will be listened to, taken seriously and acted upon."
